Children and Chriopractic

Children and Chiropractic

Chiropractic care for children is safe, gentle, and effective. From the birth process onward, our spines and nervous systems are subjected to a multitude of forces that can misalign (subluxate) vertebrae and set the stage for reduced well being and future health problems. Dr. Mike has special training in adjusting children. He performs adjustments specifically adapted for your child's age, height, and weight. For a small infant, Dr. Mike adjusts the child with the same amount of force one would use to type on a computer keyboard!

Parents in our office report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.

What Conditions or Illnesses Can Benefit From Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractors look at the spine to see what areas are subluxated. When the child is adjusted, the nerves exiting that area of the spine are stimulated and interference to movement and function is eliminated. Therefore, areas of the body which those nerves connect to and control will also function optimally. This includes the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative, and immune system.

Chiropractors do not cure diseases, but rather enhance the body's innate ability to heal itself through chiropractic adjustments and holistic care. Parents and children under chiropractic care report improvements with certain conditions ranging from mild to tremendous! Though chiropractors only directly adjust the spine, children under chiropractic care have had great improvements with the following conditions:

  • ADHD/ADD
  • Allergies
  • Asthma and respiratory problems
  • Autism
  • Bed wetting
  • Breast feeding difficulties
  • Colic
  • Constipation
  • Digestive issues
  • Ear infections
  • Headaches
  • Immune function
  • Scoliosis
  • Sensory integration issues
  • Sinus infections
  • Sleeping trouble
  • Sports injuries
  • Torticollis
  • And much, much, more!

If you are afraid of the unknown, see all the children and how healthy they are that come into our office at the Spinal Correction Center. Tell a family member, a friend or even a neighbor you know that suffer from some of the listed items above. What are you waiting for. If it was a great movie you would tell them. Give a child a chance to be healthy!

Childhood Vaccines

Childhood Vaccines

Much of what you have been led to believe about immunizations simply isn't true… I would urge you to reject all inoculations for your child. – Robert Mendelsohn, MD

Today more parents are questioning and refusing vaccinations for their children. Some of the reasons given are:

  • They consider the vaccines more dangerous than the diseases
  • They prefer natural rather than artificial immunity
  • They have religious or philosophical objections to vaccination
  • They have a vaccine-injured child (a growing number)

45 Vaccines At 6 Months!

The current US vaccine schedule requires 45 vaccines at 6 months of age; 64 at 18 months and at least 74 at 4-6 years!! There is no proof that a child's immature immune system can handle this chemical assault.

Are Vaccinated Children Healthier?

In one study children vaccinated with MMR or DPT+Polio were found to have 14 times more asthma and 9.4 times more eczema than non-vaccinated children. In another study 23.1% of vaccinated children had asthma and 30%had allergies while none of the non-vaccinated children had asthma or allergies.

Medical historian Harris Coulter, PhD states: Between 15 and 20%of American school children are considered learning disabled with minimal brain dysfunction directly caused by vaccine damage… A large proportion of the millions of US children and adults suffering from autism, seizures, mental retardation, hyperactivity, dyslexia, and other… 'developmental disabilities,' owe their disorders to one another of the vaccines against childhood diseases…

SIDS or Crib Death

Vaccinations have long been linked to crib death. This observation was underlined when, in 1975, after the Japanese government raised the minimum vaccinations age from two months to two years, crib death and infantile seizures virtually disappeared. Crib death was rare before childhood vaccination.

Do The Benefits Outweigh The Risks?

MDs rarely report adverse reactions or injuries. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) states that only one in ten vaccine injuries is ever reported; however other studies put that number as one in 50.

As of 2004 the US government had paid nearly $1.5 billion to the families of vaccine-damaged children as part of the vaccine compensation program. That number, however, represents only a fraction of those children hurt and killed.

Apart from the risks, the effectiveness of vaccination to "prevent" illness is in question: outbreaks have occurred in 100% vaccinated populations. An outbreak of 137 cases of measles occurred when 98.7% of the students were vaccinated.

How can we agree to a procedure if we do not know if the risks outweigh the "benefits?"

Have vaccines Eradicated Disease?

Infectious diseases, e.g., smallpox, diphtheria, whooping cough, scarlet fever, etc., began to disappear long before the immunizations ever came on the scene. As Ivan Illitch, PhD observed: The combined death rate from scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping cough, and measles among children up to fifteen shows that nearly 90% of the total decline in mortality between 1860 and 1965 occurred before the introduction of antibiotics and widespread immunization.

Polio

As Robert Mendelsohn, MD stated: It is commonly believed that the Salk vaccine was responsible for halting the polio epidemics that plagued American children in the 1940s and 1950s. If so, why did the epidemics also end in Europe, where polio vaccine was not so extensively used?

Benefits of Childhood Diseases

Lost in vaccination discussion is the fact that acute infectious diseases, when properly managed, are good for overall health. As Harris Coulter PhD states: Contracting and overcoming [childhood] diseases is part of a developmental process that actually helps develop a healthy, robust, adult immune system able to meet the challenges that inevitable encounters with viruses and bacteria will present later on.

Viera Scheibner, PhD writes: Infectious diseases of childhood are very beneficial for children to catch… The general inflammatory process is important in the dynamics of maturation of the immune response to diseases.

In one study it was found that those who had febrile infectious childhood diseases had less cancer in their lives.

Vaccines Cause Autism

Scientists believe they have found a direct link between childhood vaccinations and autism, asthma and ADHD!

These shocking results come from a groundbreaking study released in June 2007by Generation Rescue. The research, privately funded without ties to the pharmaceutical industry or the medical community, included an extensive interview of 17,674 vaccinated and unvaccinated children.

When compared to non-vaccinated boys in the same age group, researchers found the following statistics:

--Vaccinated boys age 4-17 are 155 percent more likely to have neurological disorders, 224 percent more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and 61 percent more likely to have autism.

--Older boys, in the age range of 11 to 17, who were vaccinated, were found to be even more susceptible to autism. They are 158 percent more likely to have a neurological disorder, 317 percent more likely to have ADHD, and 112 percent more likely to have autism.

--Vaccinated boys were 224 percent more likely to develop ADHD.

--Vaccinated boys and girls were 120 percent more likely to develop asthma.

Younger boys that have been vaccinated show less symptoms of autism, however researchers believe that there lower numbers will rise over time as professionals are more able to accurately diagnose the early symptoms of autism in younger children.

Scientists who conducted the study now believe that the mercury found in routine childhood immunizations plays a major role in the ten-fold increase in autism cases over the past two decades.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in every 150 children will develop autism.

NSAIDs vs. Home Exercise For Chronic Low Back Pain

Japanese researchers have found home-based exercises to be more effective in the treatment of chronic low back pain than prescribed NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). While NSAIDs can reduce inflammation and pain, they are a form of passive care that fails to address functionality issues such as limited motion, muscular weakness and muscular imbalances, not to mention the many negative side effects associated with NSAID use. Home-based exercises are not only natural and far safer, they specifically address functional issues and deficiencies in a proactive manner. And thus, it goes to reason that both men and women (mean age of approx. 42 years) who participated in the home-based exercises versus the NSAIDs during the 12-month study experienced more significant improvements in both reported low back pain and overall disability.

Vitamin D To Conquer Your Cold

New research indicates vitamin D may be effective at reducing infections and colds. In this new study, researchers found that a group of young military men who supplemented with 400 IU’s (international units) daily for 6 months versus those who supplemented with a placebo experienced a significantly higher likelihood of having no days missed from work due to a respiratory illness. Moreover, of those taking the vitamin D supplement half remained healthy during the 6-month study as compared with approximately just one third of those taking the placebo. While more studies are needed, this new research does appear to indicate some benefits of vitamin D in reducing sickness or at least, the severity of sickness. It should be noted that vitamin D when taken in higher dosages is toxic and negative side effects can and do occur beyond 2,000 IU’s per day.

Antidepressants Ineffective/Inappropriate For Autism

Antidepressants are commonly prescribed to those suffering from autism. However, past research hasn’t been able to provide evidence that antidepressants are actually useful for those diagnosed with autism. A recent U.S. government funded study reported that antidepressants, more specifically Celexa, was no better than a placebo for improving repetitive behaviors in children with autism. Researchers have now completed a new review of this study along with six other related studies present in the medical literature. Their findings – there was no evidence that antidepressants were any better than a placebo at reducing repetitive behaviors or any other symptoms in children suffering from autism. According to the researchers who conducted this recent scientific review of medical literature, there is no basis for recommending the routine use of antidepressants in the treatment of austism.

U.S. House Introduces Resolution to Recognize National Chiropractic Health Month
The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and the Iowa Chiropractic Society (ICS) today announced that Rep. Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) has introduced House Resolution 1523 (H. Res. 1523)—“to observe the contributions of the chiropractic profession and recognize National Chiropractic Health Month”—in the United States House of Representatives. National Chiropractic Health Month, sponsored by ACA, is a nationwide observance held each October. This year’s theme—“Why Weight? Get Healthy!”—and related activities will focus on how doctors of chiropractic play an important role in preventing and treating obesity. More than 60 percent of adults in the United States are either overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and obesity is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and some types of cancer. There are two factors that are instrumental in successfully addressing weight problems—diet and exercise. Often, people who suffer with weight problems avoid the exercise component due to painful conditions like back, neck and joint pain, and osteoarthritis. That lack of exercise, in turn, causes more weight problems, which adds more strain on the musculoskeletal system, which causes increased pain. It's a vicious cycle! DCs are experts at helping patients reduce such pain naturally, getting patients more active and functional again. DCs also counsel patients on good nutrition, diet and lifestyle advice, in addition to offering expert structural care. “Chiropractic care provides patients with a path to overall wellness through natural approaches to health issues, including weight management,” said ACA President, Dr. Rick McMichael. “We have a growing list of congressional members who strongly support the good work that doctors of chiropractic do to help patients lead healthier lives, naturally. We very much appreciate their recognition and support.” Rep. Boswell was joined by Representatives Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.), Steve King (R-Iowa), Tom Latham (R-Iowa), David Loebsack (D-Iowa), Michael Michaud (D-Maine) and Lee Terry (R-Neb.) in support of the resolution to recognize National Chiropractic Health Month. “We are proud to have Iowa’s entire U.S. House of Representatives Delegation support this important resolution,” said Daniel Garrett, executive director, Iowa Chiropractic Society. “We hope other legislators will sign on and support this effort to improve overall health and wellness across the country.” H. Res. 1523 has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Read the full text of the resolution, and then contact your member of Congress and urge them to cosponsor H. Res. 1523. To learn more about National Chiropractic Health month, visit www.acatoday.org/NCHM. The American Chiropractic Association, based in Arlington, Va., is the largest professional association in the United States representing doctors of chiropractic. ACA promotes the highest standards of ethics and patient care, contributing to the health and well-being of millions of chiropractic patients. The Iowa Chiropractic Society (ICS), based in Des Moines, IA, is the exclusive professional society in Iowa representing more than 800 doctors of chiropractic.
